2009 Olson 25 Candian Nationals

Hosted by Barrie Yacht Club
Lake Simcoe, Toronto, Ontario

September 12-13, 2009

A brand-new Olson 25 “championship regatta” is planned for Canada – and is already proving very popular among owners here.

The first ever Olson 25 Canadian Nationals will take place on September 12th and 13th, 2009, and will be hosted by The Barrie Yacht Club (incorporated 1953), on Lake Simcoe, just north of Toronto, Ontario.

Organizers of the 2009 Olson 25 Canadian Nationals are aiming for seven teams to compete in the first year (five are now registered and paid) although there have been more expressions of interest, including an American entry from Plattsburgh New York. It is hoped that in 2010, the competition will expand to a minimum of eight boats.

"You'd have to say the reception so far has been fantastic - we are definitely headed for a successful event" says regatta co-organizer Tom Kjaersgaard.

Organizers explore ways to allow more Olson 25 sailors to take part

Organizers are now looking for expressions of interest – from U.S. and West Coast Canadian Olson 25 owners and crew who would like to participate in the exciting new regatta. The opportunity exists for out of Province/out of Country owners or crew – to sail aboard one or more of the confirmed entrants’ boats. Some of the owners currently registered are looking for experienced crew.

This new regatta has come at a time when many are longing for more one-design type competitions, and the racing will run side by side with a Kirby 25 one design regatta, and on the same racecourse, so there will be just over 100 sailors taking part in a weekend of fun, close racing and festivities.

"One of our main objectives was to make this a success in the first year," says Kjaersgaard, "and to make it open to owners who can’t easily get their boats here.  Many of the very best Olson 25 sailors are in the United States, and on the West Coast of Canada – and we’d like to have them here”!

Please contact Tom Kjaersgaard (hull # 34/ Excalibur) at canadatomk@rogers.com with any questions. We hope to create an environment that gets non-resident owners to this event, and that helps ensure the future development and success of this regatta.
